What is Islam | Islam (Arabic: الإسلام, translit. al-islām) is a religion that believe in one God, i.e. Allah. With more than a quarter of a billion followers around the world, making Islam as the second largest religion after Christianity.
Islam means “submission ” , or surrender fully to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh). Followers of the teachings of Islam are known as Muslims ” ” meaning “a submission to the Lord’s”, or more details is “Muslims ” for men and “Muslimat ” for Moslem women. Islam teaches that God lose his word to men through the prophets and Apostles of his messengers, and solemnly believe that Muhammad is the last Prophet and Messenger who was sent to Earth by God.
The word comes from the Arabic Islām aslama-yuslimu-islāman. The dictionary’s “Lisān al-Arab ‘ ” explained that Islām semantic meaning as follows: submit and obey (wa khudhū ‘ khadha’a-istaslama-istislām), surrender yourself, submit, entrusted (sallama-taslīm), follow (atba’a-itbā ‘), fulfil, convey (addā-ta’diyyah), go in peace, safety, or purity (dakhala fi al-salm au al-silm au al-salām).
Thus, Islam means acceptance of and submission to God, and believers must demonstrate this by worshipping him, obeying his commands, and avoiding polytheism.
The basic beliefs of Islam can be found on profession of faith syahādatāin (“testament of two sentences”), i.e., “asyhadu laa ilaaha illallaah an-, wa asyhadu anna muhammadan rasuulullaah “-which means it’s “I testify that there is no God but Allāh, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allāh “. As for when a person believes and then utter two sentences in this testimony, he may be considered to have become a muslim in the status as converts (muallaf) (converts to Islam from his old beliefs).
Muslims also believe al-Qur’an by Allah to Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel intermediary is perfect and there is no doubt in it (2:2 Al-Baqarah).
